Short Term : Right after the the genocide ended Nanking was in shambles and there was no economic structure what so ever. The Japanese army got a heroes welcome when they returned home from China unaware that they had committed war crimes, thought they were never put to trial or arrested. Those who did survive the massacre had nothing, and were forced to start over entirely.
Long Term : Today Tokyo Japan and Beijing China are not best friends but they don't fight and have been getting along quite nicely. Nanjing was able to recover nicely and rebuild there city. Today Nanjing is a beautiful city, there was a museum/memorial built to commemorate those 300,000 killed in the massacre. Link to website (http://www.nj1937.org/en/)
