Key People The general of the Japanese army Matsui Iwane rode on horseback into the city of Nanjing on December 13 1937(picture on the right). The Chinese at this point had only heard rumors about the Japanese so they didn't know what to expect, but Iwane and his soldiers had already thought about what they were going to do when they arrive, little did the people of China know there lives were about to change quite a bit...

One of the people that could of prevented this genocide from happening was Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek(picture on the left). When word had been spread the the Japanese would be heading to Nanjing, Kai-Shek told his troops not to guard the city and he told his people not to flee the city. Some disobeyed but others stayed in the city unsure of what was to come. On December 1 1937 Kai-Shek left the city along with his government leaving his people to fend for themselves
